The Importance of Clinical Leadership
The Medical Management Society is a pioneering Society for students founded by 12 ambitious Imperial College students. It was borne out of the growing realisation that tomorrow’s Doctors are Clinicians first and Managers second, and in some cases the opposite.
As medical students near the end of their course, the overwhelming majority feel inadequately prepared to understand the structure, function and the forces at play which continuously bring about change within the UK healthcare system. This lack of knowledge will prevent us from engaging in important debates about Social Policy. Ultimately, tomorrow’s Doctors will not be able to champion change in both their immediate hospital environment and within the healthcare system as a whole.
Our challenge is to actively pursue creating awareness about Healthcare Management, Social Policy, Clinical Leadership and Medical Entrepreneurship. It is our hope we can go some way in reducing the asymmetry in information that has traditionally existed between the Management hierarchy and the medical profession, and to foster synergy between these two important areas of the UK healthcare system. The Medical Management Society is an innovative idea and represents the first of it’s kind at any medical school in the UK.”
We will be having an exciting launch event “THE IMPORTANCE OF CLINICAL LEADERSHIP” on the 25th of January 2010, at Charing Cross Hospital, from 6.30-8pm. It will be an invaluable opportunity for medical students interested in this area to learn more about management at the NHS and hospital levels, and talk to prominent leaders/doctors including Professor Stephen K Smith (Chief executive officer of Imperial College Healthcare NHS trust – the largest in UK), Dr Tim Heymann, consultant physician and lecturer in health management at Imperial College.

Healthcare Expeditions International, in collaboration with SMSUK, is organising a series of film nights to highlight healthcare issues faced by developing communities. More importantly, the focus is on discussing the film and sharing perspectives on volunteering. Come along to meet and share your passion with like-minded volunteers!
6 Nov 2010, 7pm
ULU (exact room TBC)
Synopsis
This film by BBC Survival TV explores the struggle of Brazilian villagers against parasitic worms such as hookworm and roundworm, which continually infect and re-infect them. Shoes, which could radically cut down the cases of infection, are financially beyond the reach of many people here, let alone modern sewerage systems and toilets.
In regions already wrecked by poverty and malnutrition, these parasites literally suck the little remaining life out of the villagers, leaving behind a trail of severe anaemia, stunted mental and physical development in children and crippling lethargy in adults. Join us as we unravel how these ordinary villagers battle the hidden invaders and draw lessons to our own volunteering efforts!
