Eligibility

All special clinical students will be registered under the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore. Applicants must be bona fide students of a medical school, and already in their clinical years. Applicants should apply at least 6 months in advance, otherwise the application will not be considered. The stipulated time is required for coordination with the hospitals and departments and preparing for your posting. At the earliest, applications will be processed 12 months before the start of the proposed elective.

 

Postings

  • Postings are counted in weeks, commencing on a Monday, and ending on a Saturday. The minimum and maximum posting periods are 2 weeks and 12 weeks respectively. Requests for postings outside stipulated dates will be on case-by-case basis, as and when is appropriate to departmental activities.

     

  • In Section 3 of the application form (Proposed Elective Postings), students must indicate the exact period (ddmmyyyy) of their proposed electives. Students who do not indicate their choice of hospital next to the preferred elective department will be posted to National University Hospital (NUH). Applicants are advised to give at least three alternative postings, in case their preferred department or hospital is not available.

     

  • Students who wish to do projects should inform us at least 2 months before the commencement of the elective attachment.

     

  • Postings applied for are subject to the availability of vacancies and supervision, and the Dean’s approval.

     

  • Successful applicants who are unable to pursue their clinical postings should write-in with a valid reason to medelectives@nus.edu.sg at least 4 weeks in advance. Those who failed to do so, will not be offered a place in future.

Documents To Be Submitted By Post:

The following documents are to be submitted by post within 1 month of the online application, except the Proofs of Immunity to Hepatitis B, Professional Indemnity Insurance, and Health Insurance which can be submitted upon your acceptance of the elective placement offer:

i. Application Fee

All applicants must pay an application fee for administrative processing costs, inclusive 7% GST:

    Singaporeans/Permanent Residents: S$5.35 (nett of all bank charges)
    Foreigners: S$107.00 (nett of all bank charges)

We accept payment only through cheque or bank draft *.

* CHEQUE (Singapore Cheques i.e. DBS, POSB, Citibank, UOB, OUB, OCBC, etc are acceptable) or BANK DRAFT (International Draft) should be made payable to ‘NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SINGAPORE’. We only accept payments in Singapore currency, international students are advised to purchase a bank draft in Singapore currency from banks.

This fee is non-refundable.

There is no other fee payable to the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine for the clinical postings.

Changes /Cancellations

Request for change in discipline / department / hospital of postings will not be entertained after application is submitted.

For changes in posting date, applicants will be charged $53.50(including 7% GST) for each change request.

Applicants are strongly advised against making any changes and should be certain of their preferred choices of posting and dates before submission of application.

Successful applicants who are unable to pursue their clinical postings in our School should write-in with a valid reason to medelectives@nus.edu.sg at least 4 weeks in advance. Those who failed to do so, will not be offered a place in future.

 


 

ii. Letter Confirming Student Status

The applicant must submit an original letter on university stationery from the parent university. Applications will not be considered until the certification letters are received. The letter should confirm that:

  • The applicant is a registered undergraduate medical student of the applicants University and will still be a registered undergraduate medical student of the applicants University during the period of the elective attachment

  • The applicant’s proposed elective attachments are considered suitable.

 


 

iii. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Certification Letter

The PPE certification letter is required of all the clinical students who want to do their posting in our restructured hospitals. Please obtain the letter from your university as proof of certification in your use of PPE and related procedures, which must include mask fitting, gowning, gloving and hand washing techniques (this must be clearly stated on the letter).

 


 

iv. Proof of Immunity to Varicella (Chickenpox)

Medical students who are attending elective attachments under our Special Clinical Electives Programme are required to furnish laboratory results of immunity to Varicella (Chickenpox).

Students may begin the elective attachments without documentary evidence of immunization for Varicella (Chickenpox) if:

    1) He/she has a letter from a physician stating that there is a reason why he/she cannot receive the vaccine;

    2) He/she (or his/her parent or legal guardian, if the student is a minor) presents a statement in writing that such vaccination is against his/her sincere religious belief;

    3) He/she has documented evidence of two administrations of Varicella vaccine (non-responder).

 


 

v. Proof of Hepatitis B Screening

Medical students who are attending elective attachments under our Special Clinical Electives Programme are required to submit documentary proof that they have been screened and tested negative for the Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). This must be clearly stated on the documentary proof and should be dated not more than 6 months ago from the date of the application.

Applicants who have not been previously screened for the Hepatitis B virus are required to undergo the screening and submit documentary proof (an authenticated laboratory report) that they are tested negative for the Hepatitis B surface antigen.

Candidates who are HBsAg positive (regardless of HBeAg status) will not be allowed to proceed with the elective posting. The University reserves the right to require any candidates to undergo further tests for any or all markers of the Hepatitis B virus.

 


 

vi. Proof of Immunity to Hepatitis B

Medical students who have been tested negative for HBsAg but are not immune (anti-HBs negative or < 10 mIU/mL) are required to be immunized prior to the start of the elective attachment applied for. This is to protect themselves and to prevent the HBV transmission in the healthcare workplace. This document can be submitted upon your acceptance of the elective placement offer.

 


 

vii. Proof of Professional Indemnity Insurance

All students are to indemnify and keep indemnified, save and hold harmless NUS, the participating hospitals and its employees or volunteers against all losses, claims, demands, actions, proceedings, damages, costs or expenses, including legal fees, and any other liability arising in any way from the student’s participation in the Special Clinical Elective Programme.

Proof of Professional Indemnity Insurance is for the period of posting and can be submitted upon your acceptance of the elective placement offer.

 


 

viii. Proof of Health Insurance

Proof of valid Personal Health Insurance is applicable only to non-Singapore Citizens and non-Singapore Permanent Residents. This document is for the period of posting and can be submitted upon your acceptance of the elective placement offer.

International students should be aware that coverage by an international policy may require them to cover any medical expenses incurred during their attachments and be reimbursed later.

 


 

ix. Letter Certifying Completion of Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Modules

This is only applicable if you have a posting at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) and can be submitted upon your acceptance of the elective placement offer but before the posting begins.

Please ensure that the BCLS certification covers modules in one–rescuer CPR, adult foreign–body airway obstruction (conscious to unconscious), infant CPR, and infant foreign–body airway obstruction. This must be clearly stated on the letter.

Students who are unable to submit a valid BCLS certification, that covers the modules, before the commencement of their posting, will not be allowed to report to the hospital/department.

Other Information

 

Vaccinations

Applicants are strongly advised to be vaccinated against communicable diseases such as Varicella (Chicken Pox) and Rubella.

 

Evaluation

All reports will be sent directly to the students’ respective universities, with the exception of those who have been instructed by their universities to collect their reports personally. In such cases, students should inform us when they report for their posting(s) on the first day, and to collect the forms from us at the end of the posting(s).

Please note that the Dean’s Office will not endorse any documents from your parent University or any other special request forms, which require(s) our confirmation or acknowledgement, upon the completion of your posting(s).

If necessary, the Dean’s Office will issue a Letter of Completion upon request, verifying your completion of the posting(s).

 

Immigration

Applicants from the countries listed on the following website Immigration & Checkpoints Authority will need to apply for a visa before arriving in Singapore.

If the total duration of your posting is more than 30 days, you are required to apply for the Work Holiday Pass under the Work Holiday Programme administered by the Ministry of Manpower. The Work Holiday Programme is open to undergraduates and graduates from universities and equivalent institutions in Australia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States. The Ministry will accept applicants from the following universities or equivalent institutions as listed on the website Work Holiday Pass.

If you do not meet the Work Holiday Programme criteria, you would usually be issued a 30–day Visit Pass at the immigration checkpoint in Singapore. If the total duration of your posting exceeds 30 days, you are required to extend your stay through the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority, when in Singapore, in order to complete your posting. In addition, if your posting exceeds 60 days, when you apply for an extension through the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority, you may be requested to provide certain documentation such as a letter confirming your clinical attachment in Singapore. Please approach the Dean’s Office for the letter.

Ongoing Infection Control Precautionary Measures

In the event of any epidemic outbreak, the University reserves the right to cancel your placement.

You are to adhere to infection control guidelines set by the Ministry of Health, the hospital of posting, and NUS.

You may be required to don PPE during the clinical postings. PPE includes N95 masks, surgical masks, goggles, gowns, aprons and gloves. The use of these items will vary according to the level of alert.

You will be required to monitor your temperature at least twice daily and are to have a thermometer (digital is recommended) available upon registration on the first day of reporting.
